Ear Infection Symptoms

A collection of ear infection symptoms can be involved when someone has otitis media. What is this conditionall Otitis media comes from Latin and refers to an infection of the inner ear. Let's take a look at some of the symptoms that may present in this condition.

Pressure and pain

Usually, the middle of the ear is sterile. However, when it is infected by bacteria, pus can collect inside of it. Pressure can build up at this point, and the situation may become significantly painful.

Perforated eardrum

In particularly severe cases, or in those that go without treatment, the eardrum might break. This may seem as though it would be a serious issue, but actually it can be welcome to the individual as it may lead to relief from the significant levels of pressure and pain. Keep in mind that in the majority of the cases that this occurs, the eardrum will still heal and return to its normal state after some time.

Pus in the ear canal

Should the eardrum perforate, then pus that was located in the middle ear may flow through the ear canal. In some cases it can even be noticed.

What causes an ear infection?

Now that we've discussed some of the possible ear infection symptoms, let's take a moment to look at what leads to this illness. In children, it is most frequently brought on by infection with S. pneumoniae. This type would be a bacterial form of otitis media. In adults, the reason most often seen is H. influenzae, which is also a bacteria. Other infectious agents, including some viruses, can also cause an ear infection. Incidence is also raised in people who have a dysfunctional Eustachian tube. It seems that genetics can also be involved as a risk factor.

Ear Infections and Traditional Chinese Medicine

The following is based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM is based on the observation that everything is a combination of opposites: yin (cold, cleansing) and yang (hot, building), many of which we control through diet, exercise, sex, environment, thought, etc.

There are two types of ear infections, inflammation (otitis): external and internal. External otitis, also know as swimmers ear, affects the outer ear. It is generally caused by an upper respiratory infection. Otitis media affects the middle ear (behind the eardrum) and is common in infants and children. The Eustachian (connects naso-pharynx and middle ear) and auditory tubes (connect the ear to the back of the nasal cavity) regulate air pressure, temperature and moisture. Low pressure, colder temperatures tend to increase moisture, water in the ears, especially in young children, babies. Excess moisture, water in the ear canals and Eustachian tubes can accumulate, stagnate and fester, attracting and feeding bacteria and viruses that inflame and pressurize the ear causing an earache: sharp, dull or throbbing pain, feeling of fullness in the ear and or a high fever (as high as 103 F). High altitude and or colder temperatures increase discomfort and infection.

The ears (connected to the nasal cavity) are susceptible to an external or internal attack of cold and damp. Cold and damp air travels with the wind and easily penetrates the nose, mouth and ears. In the extreme, this tends to cause condensation in the ears. Cold condenses. In nature, winter cold cools, hardens and condenses water in air into rain, snow and ice. In the body, cold condenses fluids in the lungs, nose, throat, sinuses, mouth, ears, etc. into water, mucous and phlegm. Bacteria and viruses thrive in stagnant, watery mediums (mucous, phlegm, cysts, urine, etc.) before inflaming and infecting.

Middle ear infections are common in children. Children tend to be weak, cold as they are still developing. This weakness, lack of energy, heat makes them more susceptible to cold and damp, external and internal.

Internally, the body is heated in many ways via digestion, circulation, locomotion, etc. all of which are heated fueled by blood, nutrients, protein and fat. Protein and fat build and fuel all structure and function.

Digestion is a major source of heat within the body. Three meals per day activate digestion, acid, enzymes and bile in the stomach and small intestines (twenty-two feet in length), which in turn, generates heat, much in the same way, a car engine heats the car. Heat from digestion naturally rises into the lungs, throat, mouth, nose, sinuses and ears, heating and drying.
Ear Infections and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Ear Infections and Traditional Chinese Medicine

The lungs (includes throat, nose, sinuses, etc.) are naturally moist. Moisture, water facilitates the exchange of gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide. Too much or too little weakens the exchange, which in turn, disrupts the breath and or causes infection, inflammation, etc.

Weak digestion (common in children) generates less heat, causing a temperature drop and subsequent cooling and moistening (water, mucous and phlegm) of the lungs, nose, throat, etc. In nature, te cold temperatures of evening, night time thicken and harden water in the air into the morning dew. In winter, cold temperatures thicken, harden water in the air into rain, snow and ice. In the body, colder temperatures thicken, harden water in the lungs, nose, throat ad sinuses into mucous and phlegm.

Low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, nuts and seeds) and high carbohydrate diets, in the extreme, weaken, cool and dilute digestion (acid, enzymes), elimination (loose stools), respiration (mucous, phlegm), ears (water, infection, inflammation), immunity (tendency to catch colds), etc. Milk and cereal are cold damp as is orange juice. Hot cereals with a little cinnamon or ginger are more warming, building.

The middle diet, meal plan including spices (cumin, coriander fennel, cayenne, ginger, etc.) is recommended. Use spices in soups, stews, desserts, etc. Spices increase digestion and dry dampness: excess fluids: mucous, phlegm, loose stools, edema, cellulite, etc. Ginger or cinnamon can be used in cookies, desserts. Vegetables (carrots, yams) and fruits (apples, pineapple, etc.) can be used as sweeteners, to reduce sugar cravings. Cooked foods, soups, stews, protein and fat stimulate, warm the body: lungs, digestive organs etc Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, salads, tropical fruits, smoothies, shakes and cold drinks cool and moisten the body.

Garlic or peppermint oil drops in the ear are commonly used as they dry dampness while fighting infection. Ear cones, candles are used for the same reason. The candles are placed in the ear and set on fire. As the cone, candle burns down, it absorbs water, dries the ear. There are different types of ear candles. Ear candles with wax may drip excess wax into the ears.

Ear Pain Causes and Symptoms

Ear pain is one of the chief complaints for both adults and children. It is important for the cause of the ear pain to be determined before tying to treat the symptom. This can be the symptom of a direct cause or an indirect cause (pain which originates from another region of the body and radiates into the ear). Treatment of ear pain will depend entirely on the underlying cause. Treatment can range from antibiotics to surgery. In fact for some causes of it, there is no real way to prevent the pain, only to treat the symptom itself. It is important to take care of your ears by avoiding loud environments without protection and keeping all objects including cotton swabs our of the ear canal.

Some of the more common causes of ear pain are:

* Ear trauma

This includes slapping or blunt force on the exterior of the ear, loud sounds or blasts of sounds, and excessive ear picking.

* Ear conditions

Ear conditions vary and can be from bacteria causing ear infections, middle ear infection or otitis media. Having a build up of wax holding fluid in can cause pain. Swimmer's ear is when water becomes trapped in the ear canal and causes pain. A foreign object stuck in the ear, a perforation of the tympanic membrane, a boil in the canal, cold sores or ulcers in the ear canal and cancer of the ear are all types of ear conditions that can cause pain. There are far too many ear conditions to list them all, this is only a list of some of the more common conditions.

* External ear pain

Again these can be external ear trauma that does not impact the inner or middle ear. External hematoma, boils, or skin cancer can cause external pain of the ear.

* Underlying causes of referred ear pain
Ear Pain Causes and Symptoms

This is when pain originates in one place and radiates into the ear. Dental work or periodontal abscess, along with other dental disorders often cause ear pain. Infections of the throat or sinus passage way, along with tonsillitis, pharyngitis tumors or cancer of the tongue, larynx, or spine can cause ear pain. TMJ disorder or jaw arthritis are tow skeletal disorders that can cause ear pain. Barotrauma which often referred to as ear popping when a person is involved in air travel or scuba diving. Certain kinds of nerve disorders can cause this; as can various skin disorders such as eczema and dermatitis. Glue ear is relatively unheard of but actually is the culprit of many ear pain patients. It is a condition when the fluid accumulates in the middle ear.

Again treatment for ear pain depends upon the underlying cause. The list above barely scratches the surface of the under lying cause that could be resulting in pain. When ever you have ear pain or ringing in your ears, you should contact your health care professional for medical treatment. Only a trained health care professional we be able to determine what the cause is.

Ear Infection Natural Home Remedies

Ear Infection Natural Home Remedies
Ear Infection Natural Home Remedies
Ears are very important organs and they need special care as well so that they can never be infected from any disease or infection. There are many people who are having some issues with their ears because of negligence and no care aspects. One should be very careful about ears because the probability of infection in them is much higher as compared to any other part of human body. Ears are very delicate and they can be very easily attacked by different infections and viruses. Home remedies for ear infections can be the best solution for all the major problems of ears because natural phenomenon has the ability to work instantly with perfect perspectives. Effective and safe home remedies for ear infections can lead to perfect treatments.

There are many ear infection home remedies for different infections. They can be very helpful to recover ear infections and one would be able to get rid of these infections with ease. Natural treatments are much more powerful then any other treatment and they can be much safer as compared to other treatments. Onion juice can be very good for the ears and it can be soaked in the ear with the help of cotton ball. Make a little ball of cotton that includes onion juice and soak inside the ear, it can be very good for ear and have the ability to remove infections. Garlic oil is a very good natural home remedy for ear and it can bring positive changes if one is having some ear infections. One should try to use garlic oil on regular basis and it has been recommended to put a few drops of this oil in ear before going to sleep. One should never try to improvise these home remedies for the children because it can be a bit dangerous for them. These remedies are especially for adults and they should be used for the treatments of adults. Treatment of ear infections with home remedies is very reliable and effective.

Pain can also be a major problem when one is infected from any kind of ear infection. Pain relief is very hard to find but one can certainly get some sort of pain relief with the help of mullein flower's oil. This is a very good home remedy treatment which can be really effective to decrease the level of pain in the ear. This oil can also be soaked with cotton and then it can be putted inside the ear to get some relief. Fungal infections can also directly attack to the ears and they can be very lethal as well. There are different techniques which can be improvised to stop the growth of fungus and heal the infection. Vinegar is most probably considered to be one of the best techniques for this perspective. It can be used with the help of cotton and used in the ear so that fungus infections can be removed. It should be done on regular basis as well because fungal infections are usually for a longer period of time.

Ear Infection Cures - The Natural Way

Ear Infection Cures - The Natural Way
Ear Infection Cures - The Natural Way
Ear Infections can be extremely painful for young children and often parents feel stressed and unclear about what to do when their son or daughter is in pain.  Antibiotics have long been the treatment offered by medical specialists.  However, recent studies have concluded using antibiotics does not offer much help with this painful pediatric condition.  Moreover, the use of surgically implanted tubes does not seem to help either.
In order to take care of the child with frequent ear infections, a parent needs to seek the cause of the problem and not treat the symptom.  Fortunately, terrific alternative therapies abound for this common condition.

There are 10 basic treatments a parent should follow to help a child overcome childhood ear infections.

1. The child should be checked by a chiropractor to see if misalignment in the bones of the neck exists.  Then have the     misalignments corrected.

2. Take the children off all dairy products-they are mucous forming and will drive mucous into the inner ear.

3. Take the child off refined sugars including sugar, corn syrup, corn sweeteners, turbinado sugar, brown sugar, honey, and others-sugar weakens the immune system.

4. Take all trans-fats and hydrogenated fats out of the diet.  They cause inflammation of the ear tube.

5. Give the child a supplement with vitamin C and zinc.

6. Give the child echinacea, garlic, and colostrum.

7. Have the child wear a hat that covers his ears daily in the cold weather.

8. Use homeopathic eardrops to soothe the ears.

9. Use warm compresses on the ears to soothe the ears.

10. Keep her head out of the water so fluid cannot move up into the ears.

As a child begins to get well again when following these steps, it is not uncommon for him to become sick a couple of times and fight the infections without antibiotics.  This is good for a child's immune system to fight infections without turning to antibiotics.  Let your child have a fever.  It's good for her.  Fever helps to fight infection.  Let your child rest and become well.  If she loses her appetite when sick, cease intake of food or supplements until the appetite returns.  If your child is in pain, use homeopathic eardrops made with arnica and belladonna to relieve the ear pain.

If you follow these helpful steps, your child will become well again.

Do You Know the Symptoms of an Inner Ear Infection?

Do You Know the Symptoms of an Inner Ear Infection?
Do You Know the Symptoms of an Inner Ear Infection?
You could begin to notice some loss of hearing and this will be because of a blockage in the ear. You could also experience tinnitus [ringing in the ears] plus a feeling of fullness and pressure.

If the hearing loss is in a child you will probably notice that they will need the TV turned up or they might not answer or come to you when you call. They could appear as though they are not paying attention at school, but all of this could be because they are not hearing so well.

Mostly ear infections seem to come after flu or a bad cold and can possibly be accompanied by a fever.

If you find that the pressure inside your ear has built up to such an extent that the eardrum has burst, you will notice a thick yellow mucus draining from the ear. This may seem quite frightening but you shouldn't get too uptight about it, the eardrum is quite capable of healing itself.

Also because of the pressure when the tubes in your ear become blocked you could feel quite sick and dizzy. Strangely your eyes can be affected by this condition, they can seem to drift sideways before they move back into focus. Symptoms of inner ear infection, altogether a rather nasty and debilitating feeling but not life threatening.

Middle ear infections seem to mostly hit small children under six years of age. Usually after that age they will grow out of having these infections and should be alright as they are growing up, having no lasting problems.

The reason for children being so susceptible is because their tubes from ear to nose are naturally quite small and easily get blocked.

The best thing to do when children exhibit symptoms of inner ear infection is to watch and wait, the situation can clear up without any help from you, but if this is not the case then naturally you need to consult your doctor.

The pain from this affliction can be quite sharp but will not necessarily be accompanied by fever.

Mostly this inflammation and infection occurs just behind the eardrum. The Eustachian tube becomes blocked and is not ventilated properly meaning that fluids cannot drain through and out through the nose.

Ears normally produce a small amount of fluid, this is quite natural and you shouldn't even notice when it drains down your throat.

When you get such a blockage it could be due to a respiratory infection, blocked sinuses or even adenoidal problems.

If you have had a cold, the Eustachian tube, which drains any fluid from the ears into the throat, becomes swollen and blocked with mucus/catarrh. Because the fluids are not draining away properly they can become quite nasty and germs can build up as a result of this.

These inner ear infections can last for quite a few weeks before they really clear up, if they continue beyond this then you obviously need to see your doctor.

Antibiotics - Good or Bad? When To Take Them, When To Refrain And What To Do After We've Taken Them!

Antibiotics - Good or Bad
Antibiotics - Good or Bad
The odds that you've had one of those nasty winter or spring colds are pretty high. These are the colds that seem to drag on forever gradually turning into an upper respiratory infection. We feel awful, lack energy and usually as a last resort find ourselves in room filled with other people coughing and spluttering, waiting to see the doctor. Unfortunately, the doctor's usual response will be to put you on a course of antibiotics.

Don't get me wrong. I am not against the proper use of antibiotics. They have the potential to be lifesavers when used properly, but they are not a cure-all. Antibiotics are usually used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as tuberculosis, salmonella, and some forms of meningitis. However, they do not work against other organisms such as viruses or certain fungi. It's important to bear this in mind if you think you have some sort of infection, because viruses usually cause many common illnesses, particularly of the upper respiratory tract such as the common cold and sore throats.

A virus is a microscopic organism that lives as a parasite in plants, animals, and bacteria and consists of a nucleic acid core within a protein sheath. Most people who have a head cold, runny nose, cough, muscle ache, sore throat and even a fever have a virus. Viruses usually cause illness for 7-14 days and the symptoms can be treated with non-prescription drugs like herbal decongestants, cold formulas and cough syrups. Antibiotics do not work against viruses, only against bacteria.

Bacteria are single-celled, often parasitic microorganisms without a distinct nuclei or organized cell structure. There are good and bad bacteria. Many types of bacteria do not cause illness and live harmlessly on, and in, the human body. The bad bacteria cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, dysentery and blood poisoning.
These illnesses can be life threatening and can best be treated with antibiotics.  If these bacteria become resistant, then it becomes very difficult, even impossible to treat them. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacteria becoming resistant to them so it's important to only take them when absolutely necessary.

HOW DO ANTIBIOTICS WORK

The very first antibiotic, penicillin along with a family of related antibiotics (such as ampicillin, amoxicllin and benzylpenicillin) is still widely used to treat many common infections. Our healthy, strong immune systems, with their antibodies and special white blood cells, can usually kill harmful bacteria before they multiply enough to cause symptoms. And even when symptoms do occur, the body can often fight off the infection. Sometimes if the immune system is not strong it becomes overwhelmed by a bacterial infection and needs help to get rid of it. This is where antibiotics come in. Some antibiotics, such as the penicillin's, are 'bactericidal', meaning that they work by killing bacteria. They do this by interfering with the formation of the cell walls or cell contents of the bacteria. Other antibiotics are 'bacteriostatic', meaning that they work by stopping bacteria multiplying.

Unfortunately, the antibiotics do not differentiate between our good bacteria, especially in the gut, and destroy them all! This damage to the destruction of the "gut flora" can have very serious consequences. These beneficial bacteria perform crucial tasks, from boosting our immune system, aiding digestion, warding off allergies to assisting in the elimination of harmful toxins. These friendly bacteria include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidus and Bulgaricus, supplements for which can be found in any health food store's refrigerated section. They protect us against pathogens such as Salmonella, yeast, cholera, and the bad E. coli. Once gone, these friendly bacteria are replaced by hostile bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Clostridium, and Klebsiella, and by Candida yeast, a powerful member of the fungi family.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTIBIOTICS

The most common side effects with antibiotic drugs are diarrhea, feeling sick and being sick. Fungal infections of the mouth, digestive tract and vagina can also occur with antibiotics because they destroy the protective 'good' bacteria in the body (which help prevent overgrowth of any one organism), as well as the 'bad' ones, responsible for the infection being treated.

Rare, but more serious side effects, include the formation of kidney stones, abnormal blood clotting, increased sensitivity to the sun, blood disorders, and deafness.

Sometimes, particularly in older people, antibiotic treatment can cause a type of colitis (inflamed bowel) leading to severe diarrhea. Penicillin's, cephalosporin's and erythromycin can all cause this problem but it is most common with clindamycin, an antibiotic usually reserved for serious infections. If you develop diarrhea while taking an antibiotic, immediately contact your doctor.

Some people are allergic to antibiotics, particularly penicillin, and can develop side effects such as a rash, swelling of the face and tongue, and difficulty breathing. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic; sometimes the reaction can be serious or even fatal. This is called an anaphylactic reaction. You should use an antibiotic with care if you have reduced liver or kidney function.  It goes without saying if you are pregnant or breastfeeding tell your doctor before taking any prescription drugs including antibiotics.

HOW TO USE AN ANTIBIOTIC IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THEM

Antibiotics are usually taken orally but also given by injection or applied to the affected part of the body. The drugs begin to tackle most infections within a few hours. It is vital to take the whole course of treatment to prevent recurrence of the infection. Sometimes bacteria become 'resistant' to an antibiotic you have been taking, meaning the drug will no longer work. Resistance tends to occur when the bacterial infection responsible for the symptoms is not completely cured, even if the symptoms have cleared up. Some of the residual bacteria, having been exposed to, but not killed by, the antibiotic are more likely to grow into an infection that can survive that particular antibiotic. This explains why finishing the course of antibiotics, even if you feel better, is important.

Certain antibiotics should not be taken with certain foods and drinks. Some antibiotics are best taken when there is no food in your stomach, usually an hour before meals or two hours after - make sure you follow the instructions on the dispensing label. Do not drink alcohol if you are taking metronidazole. Do not take tetracyclines with dairy products, as these can reduce the absorption of this type of antibiotic.

There are a number of important interactions between antibiotics and other medicines so it's important to tell which your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are taking.

RESTORING BENEFICIAL BACTERIA

If for some reason you have had to go on a course of antibiotics, try to boost your natural immune system and follow this recovery plan:

- Stay away from sugar or artificial sweeteners.  Use Stevia or Lo-Han instead.

- No mushrooms or cheese. No yeasty foods, like bread, rolls or beer.

- Eliminate fruits and fruit juices (except for tart apples).

- Cut down on grains. After two weeks introduce gluten-free whole grains like Auinoa, corn or millet.

- Don't drink coffee, tea, herb tea or coffee substitutes as they often harbor molds.

- Avoid supermarket salad dressings, vinegar, soy or Worcestershire sauce and horseradish.

- Drink anti-fungal teas like paud'arco, angelica root, bergamot, hyssop, chamomile and alfalfa.

- Eat unsweetened, plain yogurt or kefir that contain lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidus and bulgaricus.

- Use olive oil to cook with as a dressing on salads and vegetables.

- Drink organic, green vegetable juices.

- Use raw almond butter.

- Cook with garlic. It contains allicin, a natural anti-fungal chemical.

- Take grape seed extract in water last thing at night.

- Take an antioxidant supplement that includes vitamins E, A, and C (among others) zinc and selenium

For this dietary plan to be affective it should be continued for at least 4 to 6 weeks, however before beginning any dietary program always check with you doctor first. When coming off the plan you can try eating foods you have cut out, one at a time to see how they make you feel. If you get gas or bloating stop taking the food for another few weeks. Following this plan for the recommended amount of time will help boost your immune system and help you to stay healthy.

Vitamins and Minerals For Ear Infection Cure

Ear Infection Cure - Vitamins and Minerals
Ear Infection Cure - Vitamins and Minerals
One of the fastest ear infection cures is to add some supplementary nutrients into your diet. Vitamins and minerals can help boost your immunity, relieve your symptoms and stop an infection from recurring. I give all my patients with ear problems vitamins and minerals with good results.

Here's a summary of the nutrients that I use with my patients:

Ear Infection Cure 1: Vitamin C

I recommend my adult patients start on at least 3000 - 5000 mg of vitamin C a day to fight off infection. In young children (less than 2 years old) 1000 mg a day will suffice. For older children about 2000 mg works well.

Everyones requirements for vitamin C are unique so I suggest you start taking 500 mg of vitamin C every hour until your stools become a little watery or loose. When your stools become loose it means that your body is saturated with vitamin C. Any excess is excreted in the urine and stools. This point is called "Bowel tolerance" and is when vitamin C is helping your immune system most efficiently.

Going to just below your bowel tolerance every day should be adhered to until the infection is cleared from your body. Depending on the severity of the infection, this can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week or more. If your vitamin C intake is too low, you may not see improvements in your symptoms.

Ear Infection Cure 2: Zinc

Zinc stimulates your white blood cells and antibody production to fight off infections. This mineral is also a powerful anti-inflammatory that helps relieve the pain of sore ears, inflamed throat and swollen glands that are often present with ear problems.

For adults I suggest you start with 60 - 90 mg of elemental zinc a day. For young children I use 30 mg a day, for older kids 60 mg a day. If you also have a sore throat then dissolve a zinc lozenge in your mouth. A sore throat clears up faster when it has direct contact with zinc

Ear Infection Cure 3: Vitamin A

Vitamin A and its precursor beta-carotene enhance immunity. Vitamin A has been shown to lower the rate of infections.

For immune support, I recommend 10,000 IU of vitamin A or 15 mg of beta-carotene a day. For young children about 2500 IU a day, and for older children 5000 IU a day of vitamin A is sufficient.

Vitamin A should not be taken in large amounts by pregnant women as higher amounts are linked to an increased risk of birth defects.

Other nutrients

Optional but recommended nutrients I also dispense to my patients are vitamin E, selenium and the B complex.

Ear Infection Cure 4: Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps immune function and is a powerful antioxidant. It is beneficial against both bacteria and viruses. I suggest at least 200 mg a day. If you have high blood pressure, check with your doctor first.

Ear Infection Cure 5: Selenium

Selenium is great to take alongside vitamin E, as they enhance each others absorption. It is a good immune booster. For adults take at 100 mg a day.

Ear Infection Cure 6: B complex

To help repair nerves in the ears a balanced B complex is advisable. The B vitamins also help you cope with stress and fatigue. A 25 - 50 mg B complex daily is a good start.

Vitamins and minerals are a natural ear infection cure which can help boost your immunity and fight off infection. The right amounts of nutrients for you will vary according to your age, the severity of your illness and how much food you're eating. It is advisable to consult with a holistic doctor or naturopath to ascertain the correct dosages or refer to the e-book Nature's Amazing Ear Infection Cures by qualified naturopath Elizabeth Noble

Ear Infections - Causes and Prevention

Ear Infections - Causes and Prevention
Ear Infections - Causes and Prevention
Have you ever heard, that if your ears are ringing, someone must be talking about youall It could be good news, bad news or plain old gossip. However, your itchy ear canal or earache is most likely an ear infection. Your next step will be a visit to your doctor and they will examine your inner ear with an otoscope. They will look for red irritation, the condition of the eardrum, and all the earwax.

Middle ear infections are the most common ear infection, because there is a small tube connecting the ear to the throat. This tube can swell and become congested that can trap fluid. This environment creates a place for germs to spread and cause an infection. And since children's ears are smaller, their tubes are smaller and therefore more easily clogged. So if your throat is scratchy, your ears may become inflamed also.

In baby's you make notice that they may tug at their ears, be fussy, cry, have a fever, or have trouble sleeping, all which indicate an ear infection. While a discharge of thick yellow fluid coming from a burst eardrum, seems serious, actually relieve the pressure and may make the pain go away. The eardrum will heal in time. As children age, they may complain about their ears being clogged and have a hard time hearing. This condition may last about two weeks until the fluid dissipates.

If you are a swimmer, triathlete, or ironman, you may get swimmers ear (otitis externa). Approximately 10% of the population is inflicted by this infection.

Inner ear infections called Labyrinthitis is usually caused by a viral infection, which can cause vertigo, which is a spinning feeling. Labyrinthitis may also cause hearing loss and a ringing sound in your ears (tinnitus).

Overtime, most ear infections heal own their own. In the meantime, a heating pad on the ear may relax the pain. Your doctor or pharmacist may recommend a pain reliever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help the symptoms. The doctor may also prescribe eardrops for the pain, and antibiotics depending on the age and severity of the infection. If infections persist, your doctor may put tubes in the ears to keep the canal open with minor surgery.

Here are some suggestions to keep ear infections at bay. If you smoke, just stop. The remnants of smoke in your hair or clothes still have an affect on children. Maintain good hand washing protocols. Immunization can help also reduce ear infections. Your doctor may use an examination tool called an otoscope, such as the MacroView Otoscope to check your ears. Basically an otoscope is a magnifying glass, and is used to examine your body cavities like your throat or ears. Just make sure that the doctor changes the probe cover to make sure that the infected ear does not infect the other ear. And if you have a fever also, the doctor may a thermometer such as the Braun ThermoScan Pro 4000 Ear Thermometer.

Many people have earwax buildup, and will need to remove it safely. There are many ways to remove earwax. While using a cotton swab for the outer ear, using it in the ear canal can compact the earwax further into the canal. Many doctors recommend using Debrox or Murine, which are earwax softeners. After the recommended use, the wax will eventually fall out or using a bulb or piston syringe with warm water to flush out that nasty wax. Some healthcare professionals use an ear wash system such as Welch Allyn's Ear Wash System.

Always consult with your healthcare team with any questions regarding your health. Stay Well!
